Hebei Polytechnic University is one of the top universities in Hebei Province, which is a comprehensive university taking engineering as the backbone and pursuing a harmonious development of engineering, sciences, economics, management, law and humanities. The university is located in Tangshan, a heavy industrial city in the Bohai Rim. The university was founded by Hebei Province and the Ministry of Coal Industry in 1958 and was named Tangshan Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The staff was composed of cadres and teachers from Kailuan Coal Mine Bureau, Tangshan Railway College and other institutions. In 1959, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Tianjin University with its teachers and students was incorporated into the institute. Since its founding, the university has used names such as Tangshan Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Tangshan Institute of Science and Technology, and Hebei Institute of Technology. In May 2004, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to change its name to Hebei Polytechnic University.

The university consists of 18 colleges, offering 55 undergraduate specialties (among them 3 national featured specialties), 28 master programs, and 8 programs of master of engineering. Besides, it has the qualification to enroll master applicants at equivalent educational level and international students. At present, there are about 26000 students of all kinds studying at the university. Moreover, it has 3 provincial key disciplines, 2 disciplines to be specially developed by the province, one lab jointly developed by the ministry and the province and 4 provincial key labs. The university has a group of more than 1000 high quality professional teachers, including over 400 professors and associate professors. About sixty percent of the teachers have postgraduate qualifications.
