Shanghai Second Polytechnic University (SSPU) was founded in 1960, originally as “Shanghai Spare-time Polytechnic University”. The university was renamed “Shanghai Second Polytechnic University” in 1984. With approval of the Ministry of Education, the university was transformed into a full-time vocational institution of higher learning in 2000. In 2001 the university merged Shanghai Donghu Vocational & Technical College and formed the new Shanghai Second Polytechnic University. It is a national exemplary higher vocational technology university with coordinated growth of multiple subjects. In 2002, SSPU moved to Jin Qiao Export Processing Zone of Pudong District. In 2003, with approval of Shanghai Municipality, the university became a full-time regular institution of higher education.

The university has set up a batch of research institutes, such as Energy Conservation Research Institute、 Optical Mechanical and Electronic Research Institute、Electronic Waste Resource Utilization Research Institute and Higher Education Research Institute, which fulfilled several National Natural Science Foundation Research Projects and 863 Key research projects.
