Tokyo Polytechnic University began in 1923 (12th year of the Taisho era) with the establishment of its predecessor, Konishi Professional School of Photography, as a place to master the new media of photographic technology and artistic expression. For the last 85 years up to the present time, it has existed as a unique university with two faculties - the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Arts. It has grown to a university of 5,000 students with five departments in the Faculty of Engineering, and six departments and four courses in the Faculty of Arts.

The Faculty of Engineering aims to enrich education in the field of information media which has more than 80 years of tradition since the University’s foundation, as well as image technology and computers which are popular with students. The theme of Faculty of Arts at the Tokyo Polytechnic University is Media Art, a new artistic culture that expands the realm of creative expression using state-of-the-art technologies.
